‘Subject/Object’ was a pop-up exhibition that formed part of Melbourne Design Week. It asked nine designers to select four objects that have influenced their design approaches and ways of thinking. The collection of objects displayed explored the intersection of everyday living and design practice, and interrogated landscape architecture and design as an ongoing, life-long process. The exhibition aimed to harness a slower, more reflective lens and, rather than focusing on built outcomes, highlighted the personal and philosophical influences that inform design thinking.
The exhibition was made possible through the donation of space, supplies and funding, including: a borrowed shopfront managed by City of Melbourne which was transformed into a gallery; paving samples and paver stands borrowed from Anston, which were used to construct the exhibition plinth; drinks donated by Blackhearts and Sparrows; a small grant from the City of Melbourne enabled the engagement of a professional photographer, the installation of wall and window decals, and 100 runs of a printed, A1 program.
